Thesis Title
Sensors for Optics-Based Strain, Temperature and Chemical Sensing

Read article at Massey Research Online:

There is a need to measure strain, temperature and chemicals in harsh and compact environments. For example, measuring humidity and strain in highly alkaline concrete structures and chemicals and temperature in the high electric fields of a power transformer. Optics-based sensors offer an attractive solution where traditional sensors cannot be used. 聽Mr Swanson鈥檚 research focused on the development of two types of optical sensors. A polymer coated optical fibre sensor for humidity sensing and a novel dye-doped sensor for strain, temperature and chemical sensing. 聽These sensors were optimised and fully characterised with a set of calibration measurements. Better sensing performance than existing similar sensors was achieved. 聽
