In New聽Zealand,聽gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN)聽in farmed deer聽are an important problem聽that had been neglected.聽To understand different aspects of GIN parasite infection in red deer聽Daniela Tapia-Escarate聽investigated their pathogenicity,聽the establishment of sheep GIN in deer聽and the use of聽PCR to diagnose nematode larvae. In addition, she assessed the effect of聽cross-grazing management聽on聽nematode聽control.聽It was聽observed聽that聽even though deer-specific聽GIN聽are the most important,聽some nematodes from聽cattle and聽sheep can cross-infect deer.聽Finally, cross-grazing with cattle,聽more so than cross-grazing with sheep,聽reduced聽the effects of GIN聽and the number of anthelmintic treatments聽in young deer.聽Cross-grazing with either cattle or sheep聽reduced聽lungworm numbers聽in deer.聽Cross-grazing can be used as a parasite聽control method聽that聽relies聽less on anthelmintic聽treatment聽and聽reduces聽the probability of anthelmintic resistance聽in farmed聽deer.聽
