Transport and Women's Social Exclusion in Urban Areas in Pakistan

Mr Ahmed explored women's everyday experiences of transport-related social exclusion, factors responsible for this and how women negotiate restrictions on their mobility in cities in Pakistan. He found an emerging realisation in the transport literature about the importance of studying social exclusion and marginalisation; however, little research has been carried out focusing on women's social exclusion in developing countries. By employing a rights-based and empowerment framework, his research found that women do face constraints relating to social, spatial, and institutional structures such as patriarchal attitudes, fear and safety concerns, and quality of transport services in the cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Despite these constraints, women do negotiate highly gendered power relations and are coming out of their homes for daily travel and shattering stereotypes. Mr Ahmed's research provides new insights into gender and transport issues in developing countries.
