Benchmarking Agri-food Supply Chains: A Case of Pakistan and New Zealand Milk Systems

In recent years, supply chain performance measurement has gained a significant amount of attention from industry and academia. Mr Moazzam identified a research gap by reviewing existing performance measurement frameworks against five performance criteria epitomizing agri-food supply chains. He developed a novel framework based on supply chain operations reference (SCOR) model to evaluate agri-food supply chains, thereby bridging the research gap. Using this framework to benchmark the milk supply chain in Pakistan against New Zealand鈥檚 benchmark he found significant performance gaps at various interfaces of the milk supply chain in Pakistan. The key issues responsible for poor performance include diseconomies of small scale businesses, obsolete food safety regulations and predominant share of unprocessed milk. His findings suggest that the promotion of agricultural cooperatives as a matter of phased-out policy intervention would be helpful in improving overall performance of the milk systems in Pakistan.
