Beyond the text: Voices in self aphasia
Read article at Massey Research Online:
Dr Bevin鈥檚 research sought to understand the impact of aphasia (a communication disability resulting from a stroke) on people鈥檚 sense of self and identity. Life story interviews were used as the basis for identifying how people with aphasia negotiate identity changes after stroke. She concluded that relationships with others are critical to the negotiation of self and identity and that there is support for the notion that biographical disruption is not the only response to aphasia. Her results increase our understanding of the negotiation of self and identity in aphasia and they have implications for how Speech-Language Therapists can work together with people with aphasia. Her results also have implications for informing research in aphasia through the use of more inclusive practices.
