Thesis Title
How prepared are New Zealanders to achieve adequate consumption in retirement?

Read article at Massey Research Online:

It was unknown how financially prepared New Zealanders are for their retirement, or whether the financial preparations undertaken would provide sufficient consumption throughout their entire period of retirement. Mr Lissington identified the most appropriate method of measuring the adequacy of household retirement savings in New Zealand. He developed the capital consumption ratio, and the Financial Preparedness for Retirement index, as well as identifying the characteristics associated with adequately prepared retirees. He found that current retirees are better prepared financially for retirement than the current pre-retirees. In addition, he identified the size of the pre-retiree savings deficiency gaps, and the likelihood of eliminating those deficiency gaps. These findings will help provide a greater understanding of retirement preparedness amongst policymakers, government agencies, financial institutions, and professional financial advisers, both internationally and in New Zealand.
