Minimising weighted mean distortion

Mr McKubre-Jordens鈥檚 research provides a formal proof to natural generalisations of mathematician Johannes Nitsche鈥檚 conjecture concerning the existence, or lack thereof, of harmonic mappings. His theoretical analysis of this proof produces mathematical models of elasticity that show why and how minimum energy deformations fail to exist in a variety of physically relevant scenarios. Mr McKubre-Jordens鈥檚 research also proves for the first time that when these deformations do exist, they inherit symmetries of the related energy functionals.
