Emotional Determinants of Test Anxiety and Academic Performance
Read article at Massey Research Online:
End of year exams can cause high levels of stress and anxiety for some secondary school students. Mr Chin examined the relationship between test anxiety and general emotional well-being, as well as the impact these factors have on exam performance. He found that the tendency to experience negative emotions contributed to higher levels of persistent worry about the personal and social consequences of failing exams. Such worries, in turn, impaired exam performance. These findings suggest that interventions that specifically reduce test anxiety, rather than general negative emotions, are likely to yield greater improvements in exam performance. Mr Chin鈥檚 study highlighted the impact students鈥 emotional well-being had on their educational outcomes.
