Agriculture and Rural Development: The Case of Fiji

Read article at Massey Research Online:

Agricultural growth remains a key pillar for economic development in developing agriculture-based economies. Integrating rural developments, food value chains and technological and institutional innovations into the economy remains difficult and environmental constraints have changed in the context of agriculture''srole. Mr Xing investigated the empirical issues pertaining to new agricultural developments for Fiji that could benefit economic growth and address the socio-economic dimensions of development. In addition to contributing to the broader debates about the agricultural-economic development nexus, the findings were also the first to be applied on new agriculture opportunities within Fiji鈥檚 development framework. Results demonstrated that sectoral linkages exist and developing forward linkages through innovations are crucial and advantageous for growth and to increase economic diversification. Findings of double-hurdle factors indicate that the push and pull factors influence a household heads'' decision to participate and to allocate time in off-farm income-generating activities.
