My research expertise and interests include Economic Growth, Economic Development, Applied Economic Analysis (Macro-modeling), and Institutional Economics. The main areas, in particular, focus on foreign capital flows (i.e. foreign direct investment and foreign aid) and economic growth, globalization and growth, aid-growth nexus (fiscal response), dimensions of conflict, governance and institutions in economic development, pro-poor policies, socio-economic development issues, democracy-economic freedom and growth, savings-investment and financial development, and equine industry.

My applied research projects include above-mentioned interests to various developing countries in the Asia-Pacific Regions, namely South East Asian and South Asian countries (Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Cambodia, Lao, PDR, Vietnam), South Pacific Island Nations (Cook Island, Niue, Fiji, Kiribati, Solomon Islands, Samoa, Tonga, Tokelau, Vanuatu) and Sub-Saharan Africa, and the determinants of economic growth and in Australia and New Zealand.

Project Title: Motivations of Remittances Flows: Impact on the New Zealand & Niue Economies

It is crucial to evaluate the role of remittances in the purchase of consumption and investment goods by comparing accumulation of goods by the households that receive remittances versus similar households that do not. However, given the fungible nature of money, it is not strictly possible to identify the precise use of remittance income. Does it increase in the intake of consumption goods or aggregate investment spending? It has been noted that Niueans are receiving little remittances but are sending more monies overseas, mainly for paying for imported goods and for the education of Niuean students who study in New Zealand. While the level of remittances to Niue over time suggests that it can be an important source for economic growth, however, the remittances have been used mainly for consumption in Niue. On the other hand several factors have led to the flow of remittances from Niue to New Zealand which suggests a reverse impact. In examining the reasons for such flows the study notes the various social, religious, cultural and economic reasons, i.e. pure altruism, pure self-interest, implicit family agreement and if there is any investment decisions in the flow of remittance to Niue. Based on the survey data of the households sending remittances from Niue to New Zealand the study further examines if the flow of remittances may decline from Niue to New Zealand.

Project Title: Motivations of Remittance Flows: Impact on the New Zealand & Niue Economies

Remittances from Niuean expatriates were a major source of foreign exchange in the 1970s and early 1980s. However, the continuous migration of Niueans to New Zealand and the shifting of most members of nuclear and extended families to New Zealand have led to a decline in remittances flows to Niue. This study considers the role of remittances and its welfare effect on the recipient households in Niue. As the relationship between migration and development processes emphasis mainly as being economic in nature amongst which the impact of remittances can be beneficial, yet there are also the detrimental consequences of the brain drain for local labour markets in the countries of origin. As many South Pacific Islands depend on remittances for economic and social development these issues are examined in the context of Niue. The aspects of remittances examined here analyse the demographic, economic and social characteristics of the sending household and second the remittances decay hypothesis of the likelihood of decrease in remittances over time based on the various household characteristics.

Project Title: New Zealand-Fiji Remittance Flows: Have Remittances Decayed Over Time?

Remittances to developing countries are growing and relatively stable source of development finance. The remittances to the South Pacific island nations have been significant and a major component surpassing export earnings and tourism receipts in some of these nations. It brings foreign exchange, complement to national savings, and provide a source of finance for capital formation, particularly for small-scale projects and improving the livelihoods of the recipient households. Remittances are redistribution from the low-income migrants to their families in the home country that act as the international mechanism of social protection based on private transfers. Improving the livelihoods and also enhancing the economic and social activities can support economic growth of the island countries. While remittances depend on the migrants who are often less volatile than capital flows, remittances are expected to be more stable than capital flows such as portfolio investment and international bank credit. The sustainability of remittances overtime depends on various factors such as migration pressures in the sending countries, evolution of migration policies in advanced economies, length of time that migrants spend in the host country and the declining family ties amongst other things. The study evaluates if remittances do remittances decline overtime, its impact and implications.

Project Title: Financial liberalization and economic growth nexus: The Case of New Zealand

A substantial literature highlighting the importance of financial liberalisation has been developed over the past 40 years. Financial liberalisation makes positive contributions to economic development by improving the functioning of financial intermediaries and stock markets, and by increasing the efficiency with which capital is allocated. Many econometric studies have found positive and significant relationships between financial liberalisation and economic growth and development. This study extends the empirical literature by examining the long and short term effects that financial liberalisation has had on economic growth, the level of investment and the level of savings in the case of New Zealand. The Vector Autoregressive models are used to analyse the effects of financial liberalisation on five key variables i.e. real gross domestic product (GDP) per capita growth, total investment, private investment, public investment and gross domestic savings. The results find evidence that financial liberalisation has had a positive effect on real GDP per capita growth, total investment and private investment but had a negative effect on gross domestic savings. The results provide some policy implications.
