Project Title: A novel non-surgical approach for anterior cruciate ligament injury

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear is one of the most common and debilitating knee injuries. Surgery is the preferred treatment with 2,800 reconstruction surgeries per annum costing over $28 million per year. In addition, surgery wait lists continue grow due to the Covid-19 pandemic exacerbating the stress and strain on existing medical facilities and services. The current project will explore an alternate non-surgical repair technique that is based on the self-healing potential and preservation of the biological tissue of the ACL. Still in its infancy, it is proposed that the non-surgical bracing protocol will enable natural healing of ACL injury that has implications in reducing the inequity of accessibility and provision of ACL healthcare service in Aotearoa New Zealand. The proposed project is likely to challenge the status quo of ACL treatment and have an impact on clinical practice in co-developing future research to encourage wider community engagement with M膩ori

Project Title: Getting Pumped - A new method to recovery

Achieving an appropriate balance between recovery and training is sometimes difficult to achieve when athletes are faced with heavy training and competition schedules. Coaches and trainers are often looking for ways to accelerate the recovery process so athletes can continue with their training or competition without the associated fatigue effects. Modalities such as massage, hot-cold contrast hydrotherapy, and compression garments have been frequently been used to reduce the severity and duration of exercise-induced muscle soreness. However, new technology has emerged claiming that it can rapidly enhance recovery after training and injury. Known as NormaTec MVP - it is a machine that inflates an enclosed sleeve that covers the leg. It is designed to externally compress the legs by a dynamic waveform of compression called peristaltic pulse. By rhythmically inducing pressure on a limb, the MVP accelerates the circulatory and lymph systems that increase circulation of nutrients through the blood to reduce swelling, inflammation, and muscle soreness, which accelerates recovery. To date, no empirical data exists whether this device is able to alleviate muscle soreness and accelerate recovery. Therefore, the aim of this study investigated whether NormaTec MVP was capable of reducing delayed onset of muscle soreness and improves recovery time.
