I have over 30 years’ experience of workplace health and safety in New Zealand and am a specialist in occupational health, hygiene and safety, and am currently an Associate Professor in Occupational Health and Safety, Centre for Ergonomics, Occupational Safety and Health, School of Public Health, College of Health, 淘料视频, Palmerston North.

After completion of my B Sc (Honours) degree at VictoriaUniversity, Wellington, I completed an M Sc in Occupational Hygiene at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London and subsequently a Ph D at MasseyUniversity, in respiratory physiology, involving the physiological cost of wearing respiratory protective equipment in New Zealand industry. I have worked for the Ministry of Health and Accident Compensation Corporation, before taking my current position at MasseyUniversity.

I am a founding member of the New Zealand Occupational Hygiene Society and member of the British Occupational Hygiene Society. I have served on many government committees’ including the provision of advice on OHS to the Ministers of Health, Labour and ACC. I have considerable experience as a consultant to NZ industry, and has particular interests in health hazard exposure assessment and intervention effectiveness research. In 2006, I was awarded a Fulbright New Zealand Fellowship to the US, which was undertaken at the Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, MA, where I am a Visiting Scientist.

Teaching Statement

I enjoy teaching both Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses in the School of Health Sciences and have a prticular interest in work integrated learning opportunities for students.

Graduate Supervision Statement

My approach to supervision is very much based on the “Colleague in Training” principle. When a postgraduate student is treated as a colleague in training, the relationship is always on a professional basis, where the individual and their work is held in respect. As a supervisor my role is to guide the student through the morass of regulation and requirements, offer suggestions and do some teaching around issues such as methodology, research practice and process, and be sensitive to the life-cycle of the postgraduate research process. The experience for both the supervisor and student should be one of acknowledgement of each other, recognising the power differential but emphasising the support at this time. To me, this is the best of supervision.

My areas of speciality and interest include: occupational health and safety; injury prevention: occupational epidemiology; intervention effectiveness research.
